چکیده

We may make an intuitive judgment that some linguistic expression is odd or deviant. But we cannot in general know, pretheoretically, whether this deviance is a matter of syntax, semantics, pragmatics, belief , memory limitations, style, etc. [Chomsky (1977:4)] 1 Introduction At least since the pioneering work of Chomsky and Miller (1963), it has been generally agreed within discussions of grammatical theory that processing has a role to play in explaining why certain linguistic examples are unacceptable. That is, certain examples that conform to the rules of the competence grammar, e.g. (1), are nevertheless judged to be unacceptable because they are difficult to process.

Heavy-NP shift occurs when speakers prefer placing lengthy or “heavy” noun phrase direct objects in the clause-final position within a sentence rather than in the post-verbal position. Two experiments were conducted in this study, and their results suggested that having a long noun phrase affected the ordering of constituents (the noun phrase and prepositional phrase) by advanced Iranian EFL le...

Subjacency Constraints without Universal Grammar: Evidence from Artificial Language Learning and Connectionist Modeling

The acquisition and processing of language is governed by a number of universal constraints, many of which undoubtedly derive from innate properties of the human brain. However, language researchers disagree about whether these constraints are linguistic or cognitive in nature. In this paper, we suggest that the constraints on complex question formation, traditionally explained in terms of the ...

Processing coordination ambiguity.

We examined temporarily ambiguous coordination structures such as put the butter in the bowl and the pan on the towel. Minimal Attachment predicts that the ambiguous noun phrase the pan will be interpreted as a noun-phrase coordination structure because it is syntactically simpler than clausal coordination. Constraint-based theories assume that interpretations are the result of a constraint-sat...
